Description

The collection being auctioned at Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm includes both celebrated and, not least, forgotten Swedish female artists who were active primarily during the first half of the 20th century. All were independent artists who, during their lifetimes, did not receive the recognition they deserved. The auction's approximately 230 works by more than 120 artists, executed in various techniques, form a journey through art history, from the beginning of the 20th century to today. Among the better-known names represented are Siri Derkert, Marie-Louise Ekman, Niki de Saint Phalle, Anna Riwkin, Madeleine Pyk, Siri Rathsman, Ewa Rudling, Yayoi Kusama, Ester Almqvist, Agda Holst, Zoia, Ilon Wikland, Anna Billing, Hertha Hillfon, and Maja Fjaestad. There are also more obscure and rarely encountered artistic practices, including Otti Ljunggren with her dachshund portrait, Ingeborg Westfelt-Eggertz, Randi Fischer with an early color woodcut from 1948, and Ingrid Geijer Rönningberg. Among the auction's highlights are a number of finely attuned paintings by Vera Frisén, sometimes called "a Swedish Schjerfbeck," and Ester Henning with a couple of embroideries. Also shown are works by Joy Egnel, and Eddie Figge with several powerful pieces. Ragnhild Nordenstens's triptych "Tiden" ("Time") and Gwen Raverat's woodcut "The Quarrel," from 1910-11, are other noteworthy inclusions. We also present a smaller theme within the theme: a collection of graphic works by Angelica Wiik and Sirje Papp. A key exhibition for female artists was Liljevalchs' "De drogo till Paris" ("They Went to Paris") in 1988, which highlighted Nordic painting from the 1880s. A total of 250 works were shown, including pieces by Hanna Pauli and Helene Schjerfbeck. What these artists had in common was 1880s Paris, where women could study and live under freer circumstances than in their home countries. The exhibition became one of the major public successes of the 1980s. In more recent years, too, considerable efforts have been made to highlight significant female artistic careers. This work has resulted in artists such as Sigrid Hjertén, Vera Nilsson, and Siri Derkert now being ranked on equal footing with their male contemporaries of the time. One important project was Moderna Museet's initiative "Det Andra Önskemuseet" ("The Other Wish Museum"), 2006-2009, which aimed to supplement the collection with works by female artists, primarily from the first half of the 20th century. Among other things, the museum acquired Tora Vega Holmström's work "Främlingar" ("Strangers"). Major exhibitions have also been held featuring previously neglected artists, such as Julia Beck, Eva Bonnier, and Hilma af Klint. Piece by piece, art history is being set right. Talents who, due to the norms of their time, were left in the shadows are now seeing the light of day. There is still much to be done and more to discover, and we hope this themed auction will help!
