Description

Bishop & Miller present their Musical Instruments & Accessories auction, including the Dick Parry Collection: instruments, tour memorabilia and personal items from the saxophonist heard on Pink Floyd’s Money, Us and Them and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Richard “Dick” Parry (1942–2026) was an English saxophonist and session musician best known for his work with Pink Floyd. Although never an official member of the band, he played on some of their best-known recordings. Born in Kentford, Suffolk, Parry came up through the Cambridge music scene of the 1960s, playing with the Soul Committee and befriending David Gilmour, then with Jokers Wild. In 1973 Gilmour brought him into the sessions for The Dark Side of the Moon, where he played tenor saxophone on Money and Us and Them, and he returned for Wish You Were Here in 1975. He toured with Pink Floyd from 1973 to 1977, adding keyboards on the 1977 In the Flesh tour. Beyond Pink Floyd, Parry recorded with J. J. Jackson, Quiver, Mike Vernon, the Bonzo Dog Band, John Entwistle and Bloodstone, and toured in The Who’s brass section in 1979 and 1980. After a period working as a farrier, he returned for The Division Bell in 1994, playing the solo on Wearing the Inside Out and joining the world tour, and rejoined the reunited band for Money at Live 8 in London in 2005. He also played on Gilmour’s 2006 On an Island tour, adding keyboards and glass harmonica, documented on Remember That Night and Live in Gdańsk. Dick Parry died in May 2026, aged 83. Highlights from the collection include a David Gilmour limited edition Fender Custom Shop ‘Relic’ Stratocaster, number 20 of 20, its neckplate inscribed by Gilmour to Parry, and a handwritten note from Gilmour to Parry setting out where the saxophone parts should fall on two songs. Parry’s saxophones include a Henri Selmer Super Balanced Action alto, a Selmer Super Action 80 Serie II baritone, a Selmer Reference 54 alto, two King Super 20 altos by H.N. White and a 1950s Grafton acrylic alto, alongside his clarinet, flute, melodica and zither. Tour material includes a Division Bell tour leather jacket bearing his name from Parken, Copenhagen, crew jackets and tour clothing, crew booklets and backstage passes, a Tiffany silver frame engraved by Gilmour from the On an Island tour, BPI and RIAA presentation discs, and Parry’s own jazz and rock LPs. The wider sale includes a 2004 PRS McCarty Hollowbody Spruce, a 1991 Yamaha TRB-4P bass, a 2003 Gibson Les Paul Standard, Fender Telecasters and Stratocaster, and a Hofner Verithin from around 1964. Strings include 19th century violins by Harris and Neuner & Hornsteiner, a Dresden ‘Excelsior’ violin dated 1888, a J. Dodd bow and double basses, together with amplification, a Mark Levinson preamplifier and accessories. Welcome to the auction!Show more
