Description

The clock features a 6-inch brass dial matched with a silvered Roman numeral chapter ring. The centre of the dial face is elaborately engraved with foliate decoration surrounding the maker's signature: "Jonas Barber, Ratcliffe Cross, London". The classical brass frame is crowned by a large spherical bell supported by a matching urn finial and structural strapwork. The top sections are accented by detailed, pierced dolphin-pattern frets, supported by corner posts ending in turned brass finials and ball feet. It retains its period-correct side-opening doors and is designed to operate via an external weight and bob pendulum system. With a verge escapement, striking mechanism count wheel (cant wheel) strike train sounding on the overhead bell. 38cm high 15cm wide Biographic Notes on the Maker Jonas Barber of Ratcliffe cross, London, was born in 1652 at Menston in the parish of Otley, west Yorkshire, youngest son of a blacksmith. he was the first of the barber family to take up clockmaking, moving to London by 1672 and working there till his death in 1698. his kinsman John Williamson of Leeds may have worked with or for him. Jonas Barber made high quality London clocks, mostly eight day longcases, but one lantern clock is known. although he was born into a rural blacksmithing family, his work indicates that he was trained in the strict and highly stylised discipline of London clockwork. the tradition of clockmaking continued in the family to his nephew Jonas Barber of Winster and then to his son Jonas Barber. This piece represents an extraordinarily rare surviving example of his London-style lantern clock production Provenance- Purchased by Mr and Mrs Rogers from Bob Gardner Antique Clocks, Doncaster in November 1996.
