Description
Martje Lammigje (Maya) Wildevuur (24 July 1944 - 11 April 2023) was a Dutch textile artist and painter. Wildevuur studied at the Academy of Arts and Industry in Enschede. She first lived in Enschede for several years and then moved to the city of Delden, where her children were born. Then Maya settled in Enschede again. In the 1980s she was best known for her 'side collages', inspired by the English landscapes. The silk technique she used in her first works shone both simplicity and complexity. This gave her great fame at home and abroad. The work of Maya Wildevuur is characterized by the use of strong contrasting colours, tight but also erratic shapes. In recent years she has worked in different styles and techniques. Maya Wildfire mainly painted flowers, landscapes and animals. Her characteristic portraits of people have their own style. For example, she made a portrait of Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima, but also of Paul van Vliet and of many other famous Dutchmen. In 1984, she opened the gallery "Maya Wildevuur" in Hooghalen. Since 1992 she lives and works at the Ennemaborgh in Midwolde in the north of the province of Groningen where the gallery was also moved. She died on 11 April 2023 in her hometown Midwolda at the age of 78.Source: Timmer, S. (2010) The world of Maya Wildevuur.
