Ottobock Back was developed together with logistics experts and employees of warehouses and parcel distribution centres. The exoskeleton works according to a biomechanical principle: the load is removed from the shoulder like a backpack and redirected to the paths with the help of the support structure of the exoskeleton. The energy storage absorbs force when bending and releases it again when lifting.
This leads to a noticeable relief of the lower back of up to 25 kilograms. The heart of the system is the purely mechanical control at waist height – a technological world first. This can distinguish between bending and walking and switches off automatically when walking to ensure full freedom of movement. The support force can be definitely adjusted to the load of different work steps on the rotary knob.
