Description

Polko, Elise, singer and well-read music writer (1823-1899). Eigh. Letter from Elise Polko. 3 pp. Doublebl. 8vo. Minden 27.VII. (after 1850). To a Mr. Scholz who had sent her a manuscript and a number of the "Tribune" and offered to defend her against public attacks by a opponent in this magazine. The "grandstand" is "from that most difficult time of my life, and I thank God that it is behind me. The meanness and lie that attacked me has long since become a disgrace, and the many evidences of love and veneration that reached me in those appalling days were the best balm of wounds. A man completely unknown to me attacked me in a way that could only emerge from the lowest motives. Of course, he sent me a copy, and I was almost fatally ill with pain and terror, and fought and struggled for months - was unable to do any work ... Thank you very much for your kind offer of defense, - the thing has long since been done ... privatim a lot has happened and the pathetic one, who led the blow against a defenseless woman, has dug himself the grave and regrets now long since his Thun, u. sees itself in the Eight explained by all those who used to deal with him ...".
