According to the art historian Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), Ellinger was born on 18 September 1633 in Gothenburg. In his marriage notice, however, Elliger stated that he was from Copenhagen. Little is known about his life and works, but he seems to have been active in Copenhagen during the mid-17th century. A related painting with the same subject matter is listed in RKD Images, no. 64338. The panel is broken in three pieces - joint by duct tape. Some minor chips/loss of paint. Could benefit from a surface cleaning. Some retouches.
