He entered the ceramics department of Kyoto City University of Arts (formerly Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Arts) in 1954, where he studied under two of Japan's most influential ceramic masters, Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondo Yuzo. Morino's talent was recognised early in his career when, while still a student, he was first accepted into the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1957, a year before graduating. In 1960 he received the highly regarded Hokuto Prize at the Nitten, establishing him as one of the leading young ceramic artists of his generation. During the early 1960s he served as a guest professor of ceramics at the University of Chicago, introducing Japanese ceramic traditions to an international audience. Following his return to Japan, Morino's reputation continued to grow. He received a second Hokuto Prize at the Nitten, along with the Governor's Prize and numerous other awards at the Japan New Craft Exhibition (Gendai Kogei-ten). In 1969 he became a member of the Nitten, and in 1972 his work was selected for exhibition at both the Kyoto National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum, while also being included in the inaugural Nihon Togei-ten (Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition). Over the following decades, Morino's work was exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, including exhibitions in Paris, Italy, the United States, Canada, and Denmark. His many honours include the Minister of Education Award at the Japan New Craft Exhibition (1983), the Kyoto Prefectural Prize for Cultural Merit (1996), and the Kyoto City Prize for Cultural Merit (1999). In 2007 he received the prestigious Japan Art Academy Prize and was subsequently elected a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 2021 he was named a Person of Cultural Merit, one of Japan's highest distinctions for contributions to the arts and culture.
