Sinsu14150 The Gyeongsang (경상) is a distinctive type of Seoan (scholar's desk) traditionally used in Korean homes as a low writing and reading table. Designed for Korea's floor-seated lifestyle, it provided a practical surface for reading, writing, and scholarly pursuits while seated on a mat. Unlike the standard Seoan, which has a flat top, the Gyeongsang is immediately recognizable by its elegant scroll-shaped ends, where both sides of the tabletop curve upward like an unfurled scroll. The origins of the Gyeongsang can be traced to Buddhist temples during the Goryeo Dynasty, where it was used by monks for reading sacred scriptures. The raised scroll ends served a practical purpose, preventing rolled or folded sutras from slipping off the table while being read. By the Joseon Dynasty, the Gyeongsang had been widely adopted by Confucian scholars and was commonly found in the sarangbang, the men's study or reception room, where it functioned as a writing desk and symbol of scholarly refinement.
