[PORTOGAL - GENEALOGIC TREE OF THE HOUSE OF AVIZ] Large family tree illuminated on parchment of the Portuguese royal dynasty, with dynastic descents from King John I d'Aviz to Carl Grande scroll manuscript and miniata, depicting an articulated family tree of the House of Aviz, with the succession of the sovereigns of Portugal and their descendants through nine generations from the founder of the House of King John I of Aviz (1357-1433). Each character is accompanied by a color miniature coat of arms with its crown to indicate its status, from noble to emperor passing through kings and clergymen, and are also depicted the main marriage alliances with the royal and imperial European dynasties. The family path culminates with Charles II of Spain (1661-1700), whose coat of arms, surmounted by the royal crown, occupies the left corner. To his right are depicted those who seem to constitute the main pretenders or continuers of the lineage of the House of Aviz: Dom Manuel de Portugal and his brother Dom Fernando Alexandre de Portugal (1634-1687), Marquis of Trancoso and the Earl of Sandim, as well as in the right corner Manuel José Cortizos, important financier of the court of Charles II, heir of the powerful banking house founded during the reign of Philip IV and knight of the Order of Calatrava. The inclusion of these figures, alien to the reigning dynastic line, suggests that the parchment did not constitute a simple genealogical exercise, but was probably conceived as an instrument of nobility, aimed at demonstrating the direct connection of the Marquises of Trancoso and, probably, of the Cortizos family, with the ancient dynasty of the Portuguese sovereigns. The hypothesis seems consistent with the delicate political context following the Portuguese Restoration of 1640, when numerous members of the High Lusitan nobility remained faithful to the Spanish Habsburg monarchy saw their position compromised in Portugal. Particularly significant is the case of the title of marquis of Trancoso, created in 1653 by Philip IV of Spain for Dom Luís Guilherme de Portugal and never recognized by the restored monarchy of the Braganza, a circumstance that makes plausible the realization of an elaborate genealogical document intended to support claims of prestige, rank and dynastic continuity at the court of Madrid. In this perspective, the document assumes the characteristics of a real genealogy of legitimacy, destined not so much to reconstruct a historical succession but to support a dynastic continuity functional to the political and social aspirations of its clients.
