Gr. 8vo. Berlin 17. and 18.II.1857. Very extensive comfort letter to a friend who has come back after an earlier upset and now also after a loss (his wife?) and strives for reconciliation. "... Above all, let me tell you that your being here has given me great pleasure, and has actually been benevolent, because I felt as if we had found you in the old way, and as if you also felt in what old and quite original relationship you are with us. There has been a time when I had lost confidence in you - for reasons which do not belong here to be discussed, which you can understand or yet guess, and which are now indifferent because they have lost their influence on me. When you were with us the other day, lamenting your loss, which we have known in his former contentment, I felt that the homeland of your heart is with us, and will remain with us; and that you - whatever connections you may otherwise close - will always return to us with a part of your being out of necessity and belong to us ...". Then reports about a performance of Gluck's "Orpheus and Eurydice". "The Wagner as Orpheus was very good, but the house was full and hot, and Stahr did not like it, as his health is nothing less than good at all since the fall. His neck is bad and his nerves are very attacked, and yet the longed-for Italy lies unattainable to us, by the compulsion of staying here, which the upbringing of the younger boys imposes on us.
