A George III Old Sheffield Plate Meat-Dish Cover or Cloche, by Matthew Boulton, Birmingham, circa 1815, oval, the lower body part-fluted, with leaf capped double scroll handle, engraved on each side with a coat-of-arms commemorating the marriage between John James Waldegrave, 6th Earl Waldegrave (1785-1835) and Anne King (d. 1852), who were married in Paris on October 30, 1815, marked twice on the inside with sun mark, 33cm wide. John James Waldegrave, the 6th Earl Waldegrave, was a military veteran who served in the Peninsular War and fought at the Battle of Waterloo. Immediately following the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, he wed Anne King in Paris while British forces occupied the city. Because the ceremony took place under military jurisdiction abroad rather than standard English canonical law, its validity sparked decades of intense family strife, leading to the highly publicised "Waldegrave Peerage Case" in the House of Lords to determine the legitimacy of the family lineage.
