Also bearing the coat of arms & family motto 'Nec Temere/Nec Timide', the upper right bearing an inscription in Greek and the date 1538-1589. Oil on canvas 118cm x 105cm (147cm x 133cm including frame). *Thomas Fane (c. 1538–1589) of Badsell Manor in the parish of Tudeley in Kent, and of Mereworth Castle, Kent, was Sheriff of Kent. He is not to be confused with his younger brother, Thomas Fane (died 1607), of Burston, Hunton, Kent, a Member of Parliament for Dover. Condition: The work is fully restored condition, the work has been relined, cleaned, restored & varnished approximately fifty years ago. There is extensive retouching throughout the composition, including the figure, face and background colour. The face and the ruff of the gentleman appear to be thin in places (e.g. overcleaning) The canvas is very taught indeed hence the old reline.
