Signed in the top left corner 'Zhang Xia Wen Ge' (A song heard beneath the tent, or 'beneath the command tent/curtain'). Mounted in a wooden frame. 36.5cms by 31.5cms, frame 46cms by 41cms (excluding metal wall fixing). Inscription (top right, large characters): 帳下聞歌 Zhàng Xià Wén Gē — “A Song Heard Beneath the Tent” (or “beneath the command tent/curtain”). 帳下 can also carry the connotation of “under someone’s banner/command,” so the fuller sense is something like hearing music/song at the general’s encampment — fitting the military-camp genre scene. 松臺山人 林玉 Sōngtái Shānrén, Lín Yù — “Lin Yu, [whose sobriquet/art-name is] Man of Songtai Mountain.” Lin Yu is the artist; Songtai Shanren is his adopted literary pseudonym, not a place he necessarily lived — this was a common practice among Qing-era painters and scholars.
