The turbulent skies, the orange-tiled roofs, the highlights are omnipresent in the lithographs of this fauve pioneer and go well with the Zola-like text of his own composition. It is the native, poetic realism which never loses contact with the homely earth, the tradition that runs through French painting with period variations from the Le Nain brothers onwards to Millet, Courbet and the present day."
