Adolf Friedrich von Schack (Schelstadt near Schwerin 1815 – Rome 1894), art collector and patron, translator, Hispanic, Orientalist and poet. However, as Schack felt his merits were not sufficiently recognized, he bequeathed his collection to Kaiser Wilhelm II, who left it in Munich – in his own new gallery building together with the Prussian Embassy. In addition to his literary works and his work as a translator – with the exception of his poems, some of which were set to music by Brahms and Richard Strauss – Schacks still represents a lasting achievement to this day" (NDB, 22, 2005, p. 493).
