well collection of Archduke Johann of Austria (1782-1859);A special rarity is the meticulously executed illustrations of Austrian and Slovenian folk costumes by the painter Joseph Melling. Due to a lack of biographical information, the assignment of his works is often difficult, which gives this signed series an outstanding art historical value.
Melling, from a Karlsruhe artist family, moved to Klagenfurt in 1770, where he worked as a drawing teacher at the newly founded Normalschule after his release from military service in 1775. At the same time, he began his important collaboration with the botanist Franz Xaver Wulfen (1728-1805) and illustrated his plant and mineralogical works, which are still valued today for their level of detail and scientific accuracy.
Also present folk costumes as aesthetic-historical time documents reflect the cultural diversity of the region in detail. Melling captures the color and fineness of regional clothing and offers valuable insights into the lifestyle and traditions of the 18th century.
