Heinrich VIII. Tudor (1491–1547) was King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. From 1541 he was also the King of Ireland. His reign marked English history profoundly – politically, socially and religiously.
His role in the English Reformation was particularly significant: Henry separated England from the Roman Catholic Church and founded the Anglican State Church, whose head he himself became. Henry VIII was the first English king with an education in the spirit of the Renaissance. He spoke several languages, wrote poems, composed music and was very interested in religious questions. His private life also caused a lot of attention: Heinrich was married six times. Two marriages were cancelled, two wives were executed because of treason and adultery, one woman died in a child's bed and his last marriage ended with his own death. After his death, the crown went first to his nine-year-old son Eduard VI. After his early death, his eldest daughter Maria I followed, and finally his daughter Elizabeth I ascended to the throne. With her death in 1603, the house of Tudor ended.
