Small plaster wall relief depicting the Centauromachy, in which the mythical Greek Lapiths fought the centaurs at the wedding between their king Peirithoos and Hippodameia.
In ancient Greece, the Centauromachy was an extremely popular motif in art. It symbolized not only a mythological tale but also carried a deeper civilizational meaning: the eternal struggle between Greek, rule-bound order (the Lapiths) and untamed, animalistic nature (the centaurs).
Length: 24 cm. Height: 6.8 cm. Depth: 1.3 cm.
