Description
The undulating pediment above a panel carved IH and dated 1650, this above a rose and acorn carved panel back held within architectural columns, a solid seat flanked by sweeping arms and shaped apron with turned legs united by stretchers, 58cm wide, 45cm deep, 107cm high, the seat 45cm high
This chair is very similar to one illustrated by R. W. Symonds, furniture making in the 17th and 18th century England, London, pg. 47, fig 69., it is dated 1682. This chair back also features similar motifs and comparable letters and numerals to two panels sold in Sotheby's, Olympia, 26th April 2005, lot 96, these panels were dated 1666. Provenance: sold by Sotheby's "the age of oak and walnut" 13 sept 2006, lot 112.
Condition: Great colour and patina, split to the centre panel to the back with a iron plaque to the back which has been added for bracing, some surface wear and marks to the seat.
