Description
The cresting rail with an arcaded top rial explicitly incised with the initials E.K. alongside the date 1657, the back panel beautifully carved with flower head motifs and acorns set against a stippled ground, bordered by decorative punchwork, with outswept arms a flat boarded seat on a sturdy square and ring turned legs
57cm wide, 44cm deep, 104cm high, the seat 46cm high
This chair is very similar to one illustrated by R.W. Symonds, furniture making in the 17th and 18th century England, London, pg. 47, fig 69., It is dated 1682. This chair back also features similar motifs and comparable letters and numerals to two panels sold in Sotheby's, Olympia, 26th April 2005, lot 96, these panels were dated 1666. Provenance: sold by Sotheby's "the age of oak and walnut" 13 September 2006, lot 112.
Condition: Good colour and patina, split to the back panel which has been braced with an iron plaque and a wooden bar.
