Description
The seven candle holding branches above a long stem and X frame base, 110cm high 70cm wide
The distinctive seven-branch form has strong roots in Judeo-Christian symbolism and is traditionally associated with the biblical Temple Menorah. The number seven carries particular significance, representing divine completion and the seven days of Creation. The central branch may be interpreted as the Sabbath, or day of rest, with the three pairs of branches to either side representing the six days of Creation.
Seven-branched candelabra were subsequently adopted within European ecclesiastical and decorative traditions, appearing in churches, historic houses and traditional metalwork. This example combines that symbolic form with the robust character of English wrought ironwork and has the added provenance of Appleby Castle.
