Description
Julius T. Gregersen (1860-1953). Ship portrait of the school ship 'Copenhagen'. Oil on paint cardboard, mounted on cardboard. Sign. and dated: 'Christmas. Gregersen. Flensburg. Jan. 1922'. 47 x 67 (76 x 55,5) cm.
The school ship 'Copenhagen' was built in Scotland for ØK and launched in 1921 as the world's largest sailing ship. It served as both cargo and school ship with room for 45 students in addition to the permanent crew. On December 14, 1928, it sailed from Buenos Aires, Argentina, heading for Adelaide, Australia, but disappeared without trace on December 23, 1918. It's assumed that the ship was wrecked shortly after that. What caused the shipwreck of 'Copenhagen' has never been solved. • Showroom: DK, Roskilde
