Description

Approx. Ø60mm, approx. 115g, silver, signed spindle, signed enamel dial, steel pointer (minus pointer missing), factory is fully raised and needs cleaning/service. André Hessen (Hesse) was born in 1745 in Sweden as Anders Bengtsson and worked from 1767 in Paris where he was recognized as an experienced watchmaker. Hesse also derives its name from the hamlet of Hesse near the village of Store Tuna as a common name in France. He was trained in Falun, Sweden. In 1775 he became master of the "Monsieur" (named for the brother of the French king Louis XVIII). He developed a caliber for flat pocket watches. In 1785 he published a treatise on watchmaking, "Mémoire sur l'Horlogerie, Contenant Une Nouvelle Construction de Montres Simples".
