Description

Laholm Ceramics – A Cultural Heritage in Clay It began with the clay along the banks of the River Lagan. For centuries, Laholm has been a significant center for pottery. Here, generations of craftspeople have shaped, glazed, and fired objects that found their way into people’s homes. From the simple utilitarian wares of early potters to the vibrant designs of the 20th century, each piece carries a small fragment of the town’s history. During the 20th century, two names in particular put Laholm on the Swedish ceramics map: Olof Larsson and Jane Wåhlstedt. Olof Larsson was a key figure behind Firma Laholmskeramik, where traditional craftsmanship met the emerging design language of the era. When Jane Wåhlstedt—who had formal artistic training—arrived in Laholm in 1945, she brought with her fresh ideas, colors, and decorative motifs. Her delicate brushwork, floral patterns, and playful aesthetic came to define an entire era. Together with her husband, Nils Larsson, she later founded Jani Keramik—a name derived from their first names, Jane and Nils. Here, they developed a unique ceramic style, encompassing everything from intricately decorated platters and bowls to whimsical figurines, animals, and sculptural pieces. Jani became a well-known name far beyond the borders of Laholm, with their creations finding buyers both in Sweden and internationally. Now, Laholms Auktionskammare is pleased to present Bränt & Bevarat ("Fired & Preserved")—a themed auction featuring an extensive and diverse selection of ceramics from the workshops of Laholm. Here, the everyday meets the extraordinary. Objects once created for use, to adorn a home, or simply to spark joy. Some have remained on display for generations; others were tucked away, waiting to be rediscovered. This is precisely what fascinates us about older objects. They outlive their owners, their era, and sometimes even the very workshops where they were first crafted. Every object has a story—and now, a new chapter awaits. The clay was shaped. The pieces were fired. The history was preserved. Welcome to Burnt and Preserved – Laholm and WåhlstedtShow more
