A fascinating pair of early Polydor “Backtrack” compilation LPs issued circa 1970/71, comprising: Backtrack 1 (2407 001) Backtrack 3 (2407 003) The “Backtrack” series was introduced by Polydor as a budget-priced range intended to capitalise on the growing popularity of late 1960s psychedelic rock, blues rock and underground artists. Rather than standard artist albums, many titles in the series compiled tracks from a variety of Polydor and Track Records-associated acts, creating eclectic samplers aimed at younger record buyers and new listeners discovering the counterculture music scene of the era. These releases are now appreciated not only for their music, but also for their highly distinctive pop-art style sleeves and their snapshot of the emerging British rock scene at the turn of the 1970s.
