Robertson. 1731., ms map on parchment, hand-coloured, with title cartouche, compass, and scale of chains, 59 x 67 cm. ***John Radclyffe, son of James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, was only a small child when his father was found guilty of high treason, attainted, and beheaded on Tower Hill for his part in the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. The estates were saved, despite the attainder, by entailment, but the titles were, of course, lost. However, John - who was only nineteen when he died on the last day of 1731, the year in which this map was prepared - insisted on styling himself 'Earl of Derwent-water' and was doubtless so called by many. As England at this time still had Old Style dating, 1731 would have run until 24 March 1732. Thus the map could have been prepared as a result of the succession of John Radclyffe's uncle, Charles Radclyffe, who also styled himself 'Earl of Derwentwater', in the early months of 1732. This Charles suffered an extraordinary fate. Like his brother James, he too was sentenced to death in 1715/16, but escaped from Tower and fled abroad, where he lived until 1745. In that year he was captured on board a ship in the Channel bound for Scotland (to join Bonny Prince Charlie, although of this there was no proof) and beheaded on Tower Hill under his sentence of thirty years previously.
