The last of this long line of paper-makers was riding to a neighbouring town on business and on the road met one of his former workmen, who asked for a lift. This was granted, but the workman stabbed his former employer and appropriated his horse and the contents of his pockets. Some of the last paper made by the murdered paper-maker exists in the French edition of Capt. Cook’s voyages published in 1785. The watermark reads: ‘FIN DE T RICHARD, AUVERGNE’ which signifies not only fine paper manufactured by T. Richard, but the tragic end of a famous and old-established firm.” - W. A.
