Dodd (Daniel) after, Buckhorse ye noted bruiser, mezzotint, on laid paper, proof before letters, trimmed to plate at foot, inscribed ‘Buckhorse’ in ink at foot, minor losses and repairs in margin, c. 1760. ***‘As ugly as Buckhorse’ was for a long time the unkind complimentary expression for a remarkably ugly man. This singular being is said to have been in the custom of allowing himself to be knocked down for trifling gratuity by anyone who might fancy a trial of the strength of his own arm. The Free Society exhibition of 1769 lists by D. Dodd - Buckhorse, a sketch in crayons. In 1769 the same title is used for a portrait by Master Dodd. Intriguingly, other pieces are described as by Mr Dodd. It is therefore conceivable that the picture is in fact by his son D. P.
