Hunt (George) engraver & Henning (A. S.) after Johnny Walker, the champion of lightweights. Born in Lambeth, Surry, 1st Jany. 1819. Height 5ft 5 ½ weight 9st 2lb, coloured aquatint, upper edge trimmed to image, creases and repaired damage, 510 by 405mm, framed & glazed, Geo. Newbold, 1840s.*** Johnny Walker was christened ‘Johnny Badman’ but reputedly the boxer Peter Crawley thought the name would hinder his career and suggested ‘Walker’ instead. He lost his first two fights to Johnny Hannan, an established fighter, though he took them to three hours and four hours respectively. He had a further string of important wins but then was unable to get a fight for four years.
