May (Philip William) Frank Craig [the Harlem Coffee Cooler] Middleweight boxing champion, 1895, original pen and ink drawing of Frank Craig signed by Phil May and with presentation inscription, “To Philip Agnew with kind regards Phil May”, and signed “Phil May/95”, published in ‘The Punch Magazine’ issue of Dec 28, 1895 with caption: ‘’The Coffee Cooler was out to enjoy himself’, 290 x 235mm (11½ x 9¼ inches). ***Craig was an African American boxer who became the American “Coloured Middleweight Champion” in 1894 defeating Joe Butler. He never defended that title but moved to England where he became the British Middleweight Champion defeating George Chrisp for the title in 1898. Frank Craig played the 18th century boxer Tom Molineux in the 1920’s boxing film “When Giants Fought” referencing the fight between Tom Cribb and Molineux the American.
