He aspired to be a painter but become an apprentice of Georg Jensen in 1909. From there, he worked his way up to become a designer and director of the apprentice school. In 1954, he became director of silversmithing, and in 1958, he was appointed artistic director, a position he held until 1962. Nielsen’s role as head of the apprentice school was particularly significant following Jensen’s death in 1935; he ensured the continued high quality of the company’s design and production by recruiting talented young silversmiths and designers and training them according to the Georg Jensen exacting standards.
