There are four variations of this mark all unusually using the first and second letter of surname, as was done in England for Britannia standard. Thomas Sutton is recorded by Jackson as submitting for assay 1744-48, and for William Sutton lastly in 1725-28. Given the date letter on this spoon in all likelihood this mark belongs to Thomas and not William. Jackson records two encameo versions of this mark (p.634) for 1740, a sauce boat for ‘William Suttons’, and a bowl for Thomas Sutton. This incuse mark is evidently rather rare and has been seen on a pair of maker’s mark only sauce boats with a boar’s head couped crest.
