William Pope (1808-1882) is recorded as first mentioned in the assay books 10th Dec 1830. Harrison notes “3 trowels” in this list of items submitted by Pope for assay, where also noted “a letter from Pope to the Assay Office dated 22nd March 1855 he complains that he is no longer allowed to mark his goods with “any name punches besides my own”. This presumably indicates that he was manufacturing for retailers.” Ibid. p.188. This is what has happened on this trowel. Although only part of the W remains, it lacks the central serif which matches William Pope. Other Plymouth marks with a W can be discounted; both William Henry Lamport and William Henry Rowe are retailers, William Blackford marked rings and like William Hope has a serif over the centre of the W.
