Engraved to the side with a crest of out of an antique ducal coronet, a demi-swan with wings addorsed and elevated, surmounted by an earl’s coronet. Engraved underneath with scratch weight 20=0. Fully marked underneath, the interior of lid with lion passant and town mark only. Presumably for Lieutenant-General John Lindsay, 4th Earl of Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford (1702 -1749). The Earl of Crawford was commissioned into the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards in 1726, but later served in the Austrian and Russian armies. In the summer of 1739, during the Battle of Grocka (part of Siege of Belgrade), where badly wounded. However, upon partial recovery he took command of the Black Watch as its first colonel on its formation in 1739. He married in 1747 Lady Jean Murray (c.1730-1747), daughter of James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl (1690 - 1764). Given the date of the box with the Earl’s military service commencing at this time, and the scratch weight indicating being a component of a larger set, it is likely this formed part of his campaign equipage.
