The Property of a LadyNotes:In 1853, Adrien-Joseph Heymans enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he studied under the painter Jacob Jacobs (1812-1879). He subsequently attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, although he continued to regard himself as fundamentally self-taught. His artistic development was significantly shaped by his stay in Paris between 1855 and 1858, during which he encountered and absorbed the influence of the Barbizon School. By the time of the Brussels Salon of 1860, his work had begun to exhibit a marked departure from his earlier manner, reflecting an emerging interest in the principles and techniques that would subsequently be associated with Impressionism.
