The private seller offers for sale this 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL, powered by a 4.5-litre V8 engine, paired with an automatic transmission. Born in the early 1970s as the R107 generation, the SL was designed to combine open-air touring with the comfort and safety standards of a Mercedes-Benz saloon, and it went on to become one of the longest-running and most recognisable sports cabriolets ever built.
The 450 SL was the first of the V8-powered R107 models and was introduced with a 4.5-litre engine, which gave the car smooth, effortless performance and, together with the three-speed automatic gearbox, made it an ideal grand tourer. Its elegant lines, large chrome-trimmed rear lights, and removable hard top as well as folding soft top have made it a favourite among collectors for decades.
This example was imported from California. According to the seller, the car received a complete repaint in its original sky blue, and the hard top is painted navy blue. The seller has also converted the car from American to European specification by changing the bumpers and headlights, and by adding the spoilers and sill trims. The interior is trimmed in navy blue vinyl, with new floor mats replacing the original ones, and the car runs on period-style alloy wheels of the original model. The ignition system has been completely redone. Photos show the car with its hard top as well as with its navy soft top, and there are detail photos of the underside of the front suspension.
For anyone looking for a classic open-top Mercedes-Benz with a V8 engine, a colour combination that is hard to miss and European-specification styling, this 450 SL is a most attractive proposition.
