Description

Peugeot 404 Cabriolet Injection | 1964 Highlights: – 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, petrol, 4-speed manual transmission – Desirable Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection – Cabriolet body designed and built by Pininfarina – Pale blue paintwork with a tan leather interior – Wire wheels with whitewall tyres The private seller offers for sale this 1964 Peugeot 404 Cabriolet Injection, powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. It is finished in a soft pale blue that suits the clean Pininfarina lines perfectly, set off by a beige soft top, chrome bumpers and brightwork, wire wheels and period whitewall tyres. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in warm tan leather, with matching door cards and a body-coloured dashboard, creating the light and elegant atmosphere that makes these cabriolets so appealing on a sunny afternoon. The boot carries the “404 Injection” script, marking this car as one of the desirable fuel-injected examples, and the luggage compartment still houses the spare wheel and a fitted soft top cover. Under the bonnet sits the slanted XC-series four-cylinder engine with its distinctive Kugelfischer injection pump, the most sophisticated powertrain Peugeot offered in the 404 range. The car comes with a valid roadworthiness inspection, and the photographs show a cabriolet that has clearly been looked after, from the tidy engine bay to the leather upholstery and the soft top. Peugeot launched the 404 saloon in 1960, and at the Paris Motor Show of October 1961 the cabriolet followed. Unlike the saloon, the cabriolet and the later coupé were designed by Pininfarina and their bodies were built in Pininfarina’s own workshops in Turin, sharing little more than the floorpan and mechanical components with the four-door car. From 1962 the cabriolet could be ordered with the 1,618 cc engine fitted with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, a rare and advanced feature on a European production car at the time. Production of the coupé and cabriolet ended in 1968 after just over 17,000 cars combined, and the injection cabriolets have always been the most sought-after of the line. The appeal of a 404 Cabriolet lies in its blend of Italian design and French engineering. The low waistline, the long bonnet with its wide grille and the gently finned rear wings give it a grace that recalls more expensive Italian machinery, while the robust Peugeot mechanicals and the supple ride make it a relaxed and comfortable car for touring. With the hood down and four seats available, it is a classic cabriolet that can be enjoyed with family and friends, and this injection example in an attractive colour combination is a fine opportunity for collectors of elegant French classics.
