Description
Picture plate pair with two views of a Dutch river landscape Faience, lavished blue decor with finely painted contours. No badge. Back porous glaze, glaze losses at the edge. H 23,5, B 37 cm. Frame with ebony veneer on softwood H 28, B 41 cm. Delft, around 1700. The two plates, which belong together and come from a single hand, show calm shoreland, as seen by Dutch landscape painters such as Salomon van Ruysdael and Jan van Goyen in the second half of the 17th century. ==References====External links== If Dutch landscape painting at this time does not always offer a detailed representation of the motif, it remains close to reality. The view of the viewer is directed towards groups of trees on the shore of the typical waterways that run away from the sea, church towers of mostly smaller places that are effectively visible in front of a low horizon. The representation of humans becomes secondary; they are reduced to small staffage figures, as frozen in their contemplative activity. Provenance: The Dessing & Dröge Collection.
