Description
Bronzed sculpture of an archer a, unsigned, set on a circular black marble base, 60cm high
Footnote - Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié was a prominent French sculptor and painter, and a leading figure in late 19th-century academic sculpture. A student of François Jouffroy and Alexandre Falguière at the École des Beaux-Arts, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1868. Mercié gained international renown for his expressive, allegorical bronze compositions, most notably David (1872) and Gloria Victis (1874), the latter created in response to the Franco-Prussian War. Many of his monumental works were cast in smaller bronze editions by famous Parisian foundries such as the Barbedienne Foundry.
