Footnote - Frederick Cruickshank was an acclaimed Scottish portraitist and miniaturist renowned for his finely detailed, psychologically perceptive likenesses. Born in Aberdeen, he trained in London under the distinguished miniaturist Andrew Robertson, whose emphasis on realism and naturalistic characterization heavily influenced Cruickshank's style. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy for nearly four decades (1822–1860) and spent much of his career working in Manchester and London. Executed in watercolour, miniatures, and oil, his sitters included prominent middle-class families as well as distinguished figures such as Lord Palmerston and Admiral Sir James Hawkins-Whitshed. Works by Cruickshank are today preserved in public collections, including the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and St John's College, Cambridge.
