The private seller offers for sale this 1972 Fiat 500 R, powered by a 594 cc air-cooled two-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a manual transmission. Finished in a cheerful light blue that suits the car’s rounded lines perfectly, this little Fiat is trimmed inside in tan upholstery with matching door panels. The chassis plate identifies it as a type 110 F with the 126A5.000 engine, the specification that defines the 500 R, and the car still carries its round Veglia speedometer, chromed bumpers and the folding fabric sunroof that is so typical of the model. The front compartment houses the spare wheel together with the original style toolkit, and the car comes with a valid roadworthiness inspection, making it ready to be enjoyed straight away.
The Nuova 500, penned by Dante Giacosa and launched in 1957, became one of the defining cars of post-war Italy. With its rear-mounted air-cooled twin, its compact dimensions and its roll-back roof, it put a whole nation on wheels and went on to be built in several generations until 1975, with production running to millions of units. The 500 R, introduced in 1972, was the final chapter of this story. It combined the familiar 500 body with the larger 594 cc engine of the then new Fiat 126, giving the last of the classic 500s a welcome boost in torque and flexibility while keeping the simple, cheerful character that made the car so loved. Recognisable by the new rectangular Fiat badge on the nose, the 500 R was built alongside its successor until production of the classic 500 came to an end.
Today the Fiat 500 is one of the most recognisable and sought-after small classics in the world. It is easy to maintain, parts availability is outstanding, and the enthusiast community is large and active throughout Europe. Whether used for relaxed weekend drives with the roof folded back, for classic rallies or simply as a charming town car, a 500 R like this one offers a lot of smiles per kilometre and represents the most usable version of the original design thanks to its larger engine.
