The BMW 2002 is the car that established BMW’s reputation for sporting compact saloons. Launched in 1968 as a 1602 fitted with the 2.0-litre M10 engine, it combined a light, agile body with a willing four-cylinder unit and went on to become the foundation of the later 3 Series. The 2002 became a favourite with enthusiasts and remains one of the most sought-after classic BMWs. This example is finished in Sahara beige and was first registered in the Netherlands on 3 January 1973. According to the seller it was discovered in the Netherlands after long-term single ownership and indoor storage, having reportedly been unused since 1989, and it was acquired in 2020. An extensive restoration followed, which the seller says is carefully documented. The original intention was to conserve the car, but dismantling revealed corrosion that required structural repairs, including the lower right-hand section of the boot floor, the sills and the lower rear wheel-arch sections. The original body shell was preserved wherever possible, and the body was refinished in its Sahara colour and protected with a ceramic coating. The mechanical restoration included a complete engine overhaul, renewal of service components and rebuilding of mechanical systems. Underbody components were restored and powder-coated where appropriate. In contrast to the restored exterior and mechanical parts, the original interior was cleaned and conserved rather than retrimmed, so the tan seats and door panels keep their period character. The seller states that an extensive photographic and video record documents the discovery and restoration, and that supporting material includes period documentation, the service book, the owner’s manual and invoices. Further restoration material is available on request. The seller reports that the car has not been driven on public roads since the restoration was completed. The vehicle is located in Bucharest, Romania, and retains its Dutch registration and export documentation. It has not been registered in Romania and does not currently have a valid APK or roadworthiness inspection. At the buyer’s request and at an additional cost, the seller can arrange registration in Romania and obtain a valid Romanian technical inspection (ITP). Condition of the bodywork & paint 4 — Very Good. Clean with minimal wear; might need minor replacements for small missing or broken parts. Condition of the interior 4 — Very Good. Displays only minimal wear and can hit the road any time. Technical condition 4 — Very Good. Mechanically solid, with potential for minor servicing. Overall condition 4 — Very Good. Displays only minimal wear and can hit the road any time. This item is sold on an as-is basis. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from your own opinion. This vehicle comes from a private collection and is currently located in the municipality of Bucharest, Romania. The vehicle has a Dutch registration. The chassis number is 2511875. The buyer is responsible for registration in his own country and responsible for delivery and collection of any vehicle purchased at the auction. The description of this vehicle is, to the best of the seller’s knowledge, accurate and not misleading. Route 66 Auctions requests a range of detail about the vehicle from the seller and performs a level of due diligence. However, potential buyers must independently satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description. We strongly advise potential buyers to view or arrange inspections as well as conduct any research they feel is necessary before committing to bid or buy. Please note that it is not uncommon for classic or collectible vehicles to have received cosmetic repairs in the past, to rectify damage or refresh appearance, and this work may be hard to see even upon visual inspection. Unless there is an explicit statement by the seller to the contrary, please assume that any vehicle could have had bodywork or paintwork. Photographs may not reflect the exact true colour or exact full condition of the vehicle. It is a bidder’s responsibility to assure themselves of the colour and condition of a vehicle, including its interior and the existence of any remedial bodywork or paintwork, before committing to bid or buy.
