Charles P. Kennedy 25th November 1789 - 25th May 1875. Born in County Down in Ireland into the Kennedy family of Cultra Manor, a well established Anglo Irish family. He enrolled as a cadet at the royal Military Academy in 1803 at the age of 14. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant with the Bengal Artillery in August 1808 serving with them until 1865 at which time he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He played an important part in the fighting in Northern India, in particular in Himalayan Foot Hills during period s of expansion into Punjab and beyond. Alongside his interest in collecting fossils for the University of Oxford, he is considered to be the founder of Shimla (Simla) the summer capital of British India and now the capital of Himachal Pradesh. He built the first 'pucca' house in the town in 1822 and named it Kennedy house. The hill-retreat was favoured as an escape from the extreme heat. Kennedy was influential in developing the area with sports grounds for polo and cricket, golf courses and many buildings. The growth of the area to become a significant administrative centre and sanatorium benefited from the provision of roads and a water supply to the area. On retirement he settled in Cheltenham with his wife Charlotte, the couple had no children. He is commemorated with an inscription in Christ Church in Cheltenham, this notes the high regard in which he was held by those who knew him. Kennedy house still exists and is still a private house, noted for its place in the history of the period of colonial development in India.
There are a number of portraits of Kennedy, the best known being a full length portrait in uniform in the National Museum of Northern Ireland.
