Very minor the shift on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine. Ex Naumann E-Auction 152, 4 May 2025, 273. This magnificent tetradrachm extends to the first generation of Rhodian coinage following the synoecism of 408/7 BC, when Lindos, Ialysos, and Kamiros were united in a new state centered on the newly founded city of Rhodes. The political reorganization was approved by an equally deliberate monetary one: the three older cities had employed different types and even different weight standards, whereas the new Rhodian state adopted the Chian standard and a common civic iconography. Helios was central to this new identity; recent scholarship emphasizes that he was affected to the position of patron deity of the unified state at the time of the synoecism, an unusually prominent political role for the sun god in the Greek world. The choice had deep mythological roots: already in Pindars Olympian 7, Rhodes is allotted to Helios, while Lindos, Ialysos, and Kamiros are traced to his descendants, providing an ideal foundation myth for the newly unitedpolis. The rose on the reverse is the equally eloquent civic badge, a visual pun on rhodon, 'rose,' and the name of Rhodes; significantly, the flower had appeared earlier on small denominations of Kamiros and Ialysos, but only after the synoecism did it become the dominant emblem of the whole state. Helios and the rose therefore expressed two complementary aspects of the new Rhodian identity: the divine patron who united the island-based communities and the speaking emblem of the Newpolis itself. The almost frontal, slightly turned head of Helios is also a distinctly ambient choice for so early a Classical coinage, giving the god an immediacy and monumentality quite different from the conventional profile portrait. Struck only a few years after the creation of the Rhodian state, this tetradrachm is true not merely one of the great portrait types of late Classical coinage, but one of The clearest survival statements of the political and religious identity forged by the synoecism of 408/7 BC.
