Description

COINS of ROBERT GUISCARD, 1059-1085, struck in SICILY Tari, Palermo AH 466 (1073-1074), AV 1.15 g. Three (appears as four since it continues above) lines of Cufic script: "illa Allah Muhammad rasul Allah la ilah" encircled by an outer band of Cufic script Qur'an IX.33. Rev. "bi-amr/Ubart al duqah/al-ajall malik/Siqilliyyah" (By order of/Robert the Duke/the very glorious lord/of Sicily) encircled by an outer band of Cufic script giving mint (Sicily=Palermo) and date (466 AH). MIN 62. Spahr 1var. (year). MEC XIV 66-67. Extremely fine WJC: Very full and clear. The above two coins appear to reasonably match Spinelli's illustration on table V, #1, which was discussed in MIN, page 110. They clearly say nothing about "al-malik Rujār" or "al-mu'tazz bi-llāh" .
