Diademed angel (as in Cathedral apse mosaic) standing facing, holding a labarum in l. hand and raising in his r. a plant (pianta mistica) in upper l. field. Rev. Building façade with three columns flanking two arches, and two columns flanking a central window above. Two plants flanking roof line. MIN 20. Cappelli 28 (this coin illustrated on plate I). MEC XIV, 26. MIR 538. Extremely rare. Brown tone, overstruck on follis of Salerno (MIN 13), otherwise good very fine Ex NAC sale 20, 2000, 262. WJC: The building on the reverse reminds me of the facade of the Cathedral of Salerno and the angel on the obverse of the apse mosaic. The cathedral was begun by Robert Guiscard in 1076 AD. Perhaps this coin is an early issue of Robert Guiscard commemorating the construction of the cathedral.
