Purchased AMR Coins, 24 September 2013. Ex T. Law (Stacks, 13 August 2013, lot 20129); Glendining, 4 March 1981, lot 33.
The Ryal, first struck by Edward IV as part of his great recoinage of 1464, finds its apotheosis in its final issue under James I. The Jacobean issue retains the essential design elements of its late medieval predecessor, ultimately deriving from the gold Noble of Edward III, but the naturalistic portraiture of the king and the remarkably detailed depiction of the ship reflect the distinctive character of the late Renaissance in England. The vessel is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, its rigging, hull and gunports all clearly delineated.
