Description
Leopold I, 1655 King of Hungary, 1656 King of Bohemia, 1658-1705 Emperor.
Medal (6 Ducats) undated (1658/1683), AV 38 mm, 20.50 g.
Dies by Johann Buchheim. LEOPOLDUS I ROM IMPER / CONSILIO & INDSTRIA Laureate, armoured bust right with decorative collar, cloak draped over shoulder. Rev. AB OTUSQUE AD OCCASUM / DONEC AUFERATUR LUNA Lion striding to the right between two small trees, holding a sceptre towards the sun and a sword towards the crescent moon. Friedensburg/Seger 4099; Horsky coll. 2045 (AR).
Traces of mounting, some minor marks, nearly extremely fine.
The legends on the reverse of this medal, likely created around 1670 by the Breslau-based medalist Johann Buchheim, AB OTUSQUE AD OCCASUM (inspired by the passage from Psalm 113:3) and DONEC AUFERATUR LUNA (inspired by Psalm 71:7) should probably not be interpreted, as has been done in numismatic literature, as referring to the victories over the Turks and the French, or even to the imperial coronation in Frankfurt am Main in 1658 or the coronation as King of Bohemia in 1656, but rather as a tribute to the Emperor and the significance of his Empire.
