Provenance: Bt Yates June 2017.
Charpentier-Mio’s oeuvre was dedicated almost entirely to dance. He was inspired by live performances in Paris, such as those of Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950) and Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978), the stars of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and of the American dance pioneer Isadora Duncan (1878-1927). His series of plaquettes titled ‘croquis de gestes dansés’, begun in 1910, originated with sketches quickly drawn during live dance performances and later transformed into sculptural reliefs in the studio (ex. inf. David Yates)
